- Reviewed in the United States on January 31, 2020This unit has been the best way to capture video using older inputs (or HDMI) and HDMI outputs. I have used it only once but it captured video from a camcorder into a flash drive. It was then easy to load the file into the computer for processing, editing, and such. This has been the easiest, and best, way to capture video that I have tried recently. The capture itself does not require connection to a computer since the capture is done into a flash drive or other drive using a USB connection. The video quality will depend on the source video, of course, but in my case it is acceptable given that the original video tape copied is over 30 years old! It worked so I highly recommend this unit.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 29, 2019I intend to use this for digitizing old home movies from VHS and have run a few tests with sample material.
When capturing from RCA there doesn't seem to be any way to capture in 1080 resolution, it seems to force you to only capture in 720. While the 720 quality is adequate, it has much to desire, the colors seem a bit lighter and washed out and there seems to be the odd codec artifact every once in a while in the resulting video.
The quality of the output HDMI when the input is RCA seems to be much better quality and better color. With the RCA input, the HDMI output stretches the image wider (16:9) than the source (4:3) but the resulting video is in the correct aspect ratio.
I've tested the following for the HDMI input:
- PC HDMI (Works fine)
- Nintendo Switch (Works fine)
- PlayStation 4 (DOES NOT WORK, signal is blank and the blue HDMI LED on the capture device blinks and is unable to record) (See update below)
I have tried the PC and Nintendo Switch on both 720 and 1080 settings and while the 720 has the minor quality issues mentioned above, I have no complaints about the quality of the 1080 videos.
While viewing the output of the capture device when HDMI is the input, the video seems a little zoomed in and the quality is degraded, but these issues do not appear in the resulting captured videos.
As others have mentioned, this unit has the 2GB file limit which on average got me 1 hour 5 mins on 720 and 27 mins on 1080. If you leave the unit recording it will just create new files every time it reaches the limit. I have not determined how much video goes missing in between new files, but it seems less than 1/4 of a second. The unit came with a disk for software (presumably for stitching videos together) but I have not installed it yet.
A few people have mentioned about the audio lagging over time, I have not noticed any of this. I have recorded over 8 hours straight of 720 RCA input and over 10 hours straight of 1080 HDMI input and the audio is lined up perfectly at the end of each video segment and the end of each entire recording.
As I want the best quality for my home movies, I don't think the 720 mode is sufficient for me even if the source is smaller (VGA / 480p). It is disheartening to see the HDMI output preview at a slightly better quality than the outputted video when all that needs to be done is just switch it to record in 1080, but it can't.
If anyone knows how to change it to record 1080 for RCA then this review goes from 3 stars to 5.
------------- UPDATE:
As suggested by another person, one way to record VHS in 1080p is to use the YPbPr inputs, but this did not work for me, it still forced the video to be recorded in 720p.
I managed to get the PS4 to record, I managed to do this by disabling "HDCP" in the Playstation's settings. The quality is good and I have no issues with it.
I decided to return this as it is not ideal for my needs. I need a capture device to record from VHS in the highest quality possible, and there is no way for this unit to record from YPbPr/Composite in 1080p or allow for a higher quality 720p recording.
I decided to change this to 4 stars, mainly because I purchased this before reviewing it thoroughly. This unit may be ideal for someone else's needs, but not mine. I decided to pursue the MYPIN 1080P HD Schedule Recording Video Capture VG0072 (B077P52RV8) instead, but haven't tried it yet.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 16, 2019This product saved me! I had many shows I needed to get off of my DVR before moving and this product was great. It came with directions on how to set it up depending on what items you were using (TV, cable box, xbox, etc). The setup didn't actually work for my specific situation but I kept trying until I got the right configuration. From there, it's super simple- just press record. I would definitely recommend this!
- Reviewed in the United States on June 2, 2020Unit would record clips under about 30 minutes successfully. If I set it going on a two hour tape, it would hit somewhere around the 30-45 minute mark, stop the recording, and reset itself. On top of that, it would corrupt each flash drive I tried, rendering it in need of a format each time. I tried 4 drives, a mix of sizes between 8-64gb, two of them USB 2.0, and two of them USB 3.0. I tried both FAT32 and NTFS formatting as well.
The unit would become very warm on the bottom, nearly hot to the touch while in a well ventilated area.
Not sure if I got a dud unit, or what, but after I received mine, the item quickly became unavailable to purchase. Its on its way back, and I'm searching for something else. I won't be buying anything DIGITNOW ever again.
