A decent substitute

A decent substitute
Update 8/25/10 I originally gave this product a two star review, largely because of the terrible product photo and information published here on Amazon - I didn't get the same controller as another reviewer had, and I did not initially realize that this had been a mistake. In any case - This product is the Tomee brand SNES USB controller. The build quality is solid. The fit and feel are largely true to the original, with the exception of the plastic start/select buttons. As a basic USB game pad I'm extremely happy with this product. The only down side (and reason this is rated at 4 stars and not 5) is that the D-pad has been somewhat quirky. I am occasionally getting completely wrong signals in my games - for example, I may push down-left and simultaneously watch my character move up on the screen. I have not yet been able to isolate this and I am still not positive that this is not a software problem - If I can find that the controller has nothing to do with this, this review will change to 5 stars easily. This is head and shoulders above the Retrolink brand SNES USB controller, which you can find here:Retrolink USB Super Nintendo SNES Classic Controller This is the controller I originally received in error. The Retrolink controller is cheap - poorly formed plastic, parts not well connected... It does technically work, but it isn't something you'd actually enjoy using. It does not even remotly compare to this Tomee brand controller.

Got the actual Tomee branded controller from Hitgaming. First thing I did when I got the controller was to plug it into my Windows 8 machine pull up control panel and test the d-pad and buttons. All worked flawlessly, this is only my first day with it but I'm super happy with the responsiveness.I never owned a SNES as a child my house was a Sega one. So keep in mind I'm not necessarily going for a 1:1 recreation for nostalgia sake. This purchase just for something SNES like for my emulators. I have a pre-owned SNES now as a adult so I did compare both the USB knock-off and a first gen version official Nintendo pad. Before I give my opinion on the build quality of the buttons themselves I want to let everyone know that if they are planning to make a Franken controller from original and Tomee parts you are gonna need to do some serious modding. They have changed a few of the internal plastic posts in the Tomee, use different rubber pads and have plastic guides that will need to be dremeled out if you want to replace with a SNES d-pad.
Speaking of the d-pad of the Tomee controller, it did have some extra plastic on the back of it, but on mine it was very little and didn't reach any of the other directional arrows so I didn't need to sand mine down. Comparing it to the official pad it sits higher up and feels more tactile when you press in a direction. While the official pad's shorter smoother push makes 360's easier, I prefer the feedback honestly of the knockoff. The buttons themselves are definitely a cheaper plastic (well everything is cheaper plastic) they too sit higher then the official controller. They have a springier feel to them as well. Again, I like the cheapo's more pronounced buttons tbh. The trigger L&R are a different story. The Nintendo ones are better by miles. You need to press the real ones down less to actuate and feel so much nicer then Tomee's solution. The cord is cheap. I expect when this controller eventually breaks it will be the cord. Maybe some electrical tape wrapped around could extend it's life? I dunno.
Overall for under 9 dollars shipped I'm super happy with this controller it makes playing games like Megaman on my PC a joy.

Believe the other reviews for the multiple things:

    1. The buttons are stiff. I like my buttons to respond when I press them so this does not bother me as much as others but I can see where it would bother some.

    2. The d-pad is TOO stiff and you can move both left and right when pressing down. I have had no trouble with the down button on the d-pad not working, but it does register as moving left or right if you press down harder in either direction.

    3. The product is cheaply built and is not consistent in it's design. My left trigger button registers fine while the right trigger button does not have as much response. There is also a rattle inside, which others have noted.

    4. It is VERY light. This may be jarring at first and may feel uncomfortable to hold for some. It doesn't bother me all that much, but be wary of this.

For emulation, this product seems too good to be true due to it's price tag. If I were to give any recommendation, it would be to just get a pc controller that is an actual quality and well-made product. The CONS outweigh the PROS for this gamepad. Sure it works right out of the box, just plug it in, assign the buttons to each controller button, and get to playing. However, you will always feel like the controller can break on you at any second.

I suggest that this product IS too good to be true. Pass on it. I'm sure you're thinking just like me and am saying to yourself "Well, it is only about $10 and I may get lucky and get one that is fully functional." For the most part, the controller that I have is fully functional, but I wish I had not made the purchase for the sole fact that it does not feel like a secure and well-made product.

Buy it for games like Mario RPG or Chrono Trigger, but not for games like Mario World or Donkey Kong Country. It does not have the precision and responsiveness that a side scroller requires. If you can, buy a SNES-USB converter kit and an original SNES controller on e-bay, I think you'll have better results.

From a technical standpoint, it's a great controller. The "Tomee" is the best by far of any of the Chinese snes knockoff controllers. It has a solid feel, no creaky parts. I doubt I could break it without some serious effort. Cable is seated well and doesn't feel like it will come loose. Plug and play with Windows 7, no drivers needed. It works great with ZSNES, which is what I bought it for.

However, it feels very light compared to the snes controller, and I'm not sure I like the weight of it in my hands. Mostly it has subtle issues, I doubt that you'll notice a difference if you didn't play the SNES a lot, but I spent a lot of my youth behind one, and the differences are there. The d-pad, while perfectly functional, has a very cheap feel to it. It has a lot more initial resistance than the SNES d-pad did, but once you get it pressed, it's got absolutely no gating between the primary axis and the diagonals. In a side scroller, it's way too easy to go from right to right-down or right-up. Makes anything like Mario really annoying. Also, the action on the ABXY keys is poor. They are solid, and give good response, but again, too much resistance. It just lacks the smooth feel that the original SNES controller had. Fortunately, I got it because I wanted to replay some of my old RPG favorites like Chrono Trigger and Zelda. I've gone through about two hours of Chrono Trigger without a single failed button response, and no glitches so far, but my thumbs definitely wish that the A button and d-pad were a little bit softer. I'm hoping it will loosen up over time, if not I'll be taking it apart and replacing the cheap Chinese switches with some higher quality components.

This gamepad resembles the original, minus the logos and such, it plugged into my Windows PC and was immediately Recognized and installed, i have no complaints here! Half a year later it is still functioning and working properly. It is recognized in RetroArch and EmulationStation you just need to set it up a bit and or save custom controller/emulator engine config files.
